Thompson’s Atomic Model: The Plum Pudding Theory Explained:
J.J. Thomson's atomic model, proposed in 1904, is known as the Plum Pudding Model. According to this theory, the atom is a uniform sphere of positively charged matter with negatively charged electrons embedded throughout, like plums in a pudding. This model suggested that atoms were electrically neutral overall, with the positive charge balancing out the negative charge of the electrons. Though it was groundbreaking at the time, Thomson’s model was later disproven by Rutherford’s gold foil experiment. However, it laid the foundation for future atomic theories and is an important part of the NEET Chemistry syllabus, where students can explore the evolution of atomic models leading up to Rutherford’s work.
